I’ve already shared a bit of the history with you in the previous post. In this one, I will focus on MyCityHighlight and its beginnings. Long story short: it was founded in February 2015, our 5th birthday is coming up in just a couple of months! Time flies. Things were little different from what you can see now, we developed, we took some steps back to move forward again and we believe that the future is bright.
What was our purpose?
Originally, MyCityHighlight intended to be an interactive city guide (website & app) for the most beautiful European cities. It launched its services in the following cities: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Basel, Berlin, Berne, Burgdorf / Emmental, Geneva, Hamburg, Jungfrau Region, Cologne, London, Lucerne, Munich, Paris, Vienna, Zurich. The main purpose was to offer “Sightseeing like a local”.That was the reason why MyCityHighlight hired individuals in each city and called them the City Managers. Who were they? First of all, they were the best travel guides you could imagine! Secondly, City Managers, the core value of MyCityHiglight, were locals living in each of the cities available on MyCityHighlight, responsible for their city attractions database and being simply in love with the city they live in. They were there for every user of MyCityHighlight interactive city guide, answering forum questions and emails with a very personal approach.
Already from the beginning of the existence of MyCityHighlight, another product called Audio Guide was launched. Here again, with the huge help of the City Managers we were able to achieve something that was unique and personal. Audio Tours were designed for everyone who wanted to go out on their own tour, see the highlights of the city in a short time, or have a romantic walk through the most beautiful and idyllic spots for couples. Participants of our Audio Guides are tourists that do not really like guides with umbrellas or expensive private tours. Ongoing more cities were added both, to the city guide and the audio guides. Our team of City Managers was getting bigger and bigger and our biannual meetings were turning into real conferences with participants from all over Europe.
In 2016, the Detective-Trails were launched – at the beginning only in Switzerland. They are all about becoming a detective in your own city, but also in many other locations on the map of Europe. You can read more about this product of MyCityHighlight here. In the first year, about 1300 participants completed our Detective-Trail, but already in 2018 that amount raised to over 15,000. In 2017, we decided to extend the concept further to all of the European MyCityHighlight cities. At the same time, also in 2017, the subsidiary MyCityHighlight Europe GmbH was founded with head office in Hamburg. Its responsibility was mostly the marketing side of MyCityHighlight products in Europe.
The big decision had to be taken and in 2019, MyCityHighlight decided to focus on sightseeing and leisure activities. What does it mean? From the three products of MyCityHighlight mentioned above, it’s the Audio Guides and the Detective-Trails that is still available on the market. MyCityHighlight city guide does not exist anymore, but who knows, maybe one day it will make a great comeback. We have not forgotten about it yet. It also means that many countries had to disappear from the MyCityHiglight map of Europe, but of course, further developments will hopefully allow us to spread again. Our main goal is to launch more products with a focus on sightseeing and leisure activities. Our website got a new design that allowed us to launch the blog. Now we can share all the news with you in an easier way. No more newsletters! We have new products under development, such as Finding-Daniel that you will hear more about once it is ready to be launched. Our most recent product that we are very proud of is the Crime-Trails. It allows you to solve interesting criminal cases happening in your city or in some of the other places that you might be visiting. Exciting stuff!
Stay tuned, we are working hard to create more fun activities for you, your family, friends, and colleagues a do not forget to check our website from time to time. Every important development and news will be there, we want to keep you up to date.
